The Hummingbird is famously solitary, focused solely on its mission. Unlike the cooperative nature of some birds, it thrives in isolation, even amidst the chaotic scene depicted, where five birds vie for the same perch. The pursuit of high-energy sustenance drives their fierce competition. This photo was taken on our deck, Predator Ridge, Vernon, BC.

Matthew 11:28 (ERV)
Come to me all of you who are tired from the heavy burden you have been forced to carry. I will give you rest.

Where’s My Peace?
A Biblical Take on Our Hectic Lives

Intro
In today’s busy world, endless activities and responsibilities make it easy to feel overwhelmed. We often equate busyness with success, but we must pause and consider what brings us true peace. Amidst the chaos, finding moments of stillness and reflection is crucial. Exploring the wisdom of the Bible can provide valuable insights into finding balance and peace within our hectic lives. Understanding and applying its principles enables us to navigate daily demands more calmly and resiliently. Let’s uncover the keys to a more peaceful existence, even amidst the hustle and bustle.
Have We Forgotten How to Sabbath?
The Sabbath used to be a day of rest, but in today’s world, we’re constantly busy. We’ve replaced relaxation with packed schedules and technology. However, this busyness takes a toll on us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It can lead to burnout, make us feel inadequate, and leave little time for reflection and prayer. Our culture often glorifies being busy, equating it with success and productivity. This doesn’t just affect adults; our children also feel the pressure to be active constantly. We need to understand the effects of this busyness and realize that our worth doesn’t depend on our daily accomplishments but on the quality of our relationships and the peace we find in moments of stillness. Embracing the Biblical rhythm of work and rest can guide us toward a more balanced, peaceful existence, deeply rooted in faith and community.
The Classic Bible Tale of Busy vs. Peaceful
Mary and Martha, featured in the New Testament, represent the classic battle between busyness and stillness. In Luke 10:38-42, Martha busily attends to household chores while Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, eager to learn. Martha becomes agitated and asks Jesus to instruct Mary to help, but Jesus calmly explains that Mary has chosen wisely. Essentially, Jesus tells Martha to prioritize inner peace over outer tasks. This timeless lesson reminds us to value peace and presence over busyness.
Amid our busy lives, the Bible provides valuable guidance on what matters. It encourages us to focus on God’s priorities rather than getting caught up in endless tasks. Matthew 6:33 reminds us to prioritize seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness with the assurance that our needs will be met. Psalm 46:10 urges us to be still and recognize God’s presence, offering a moment of peace and trust. Philippians 4:6-7 advises us to bring our worries to God, assuring us of a peace that surpasses understanding. Prioritizing our spiritual well-being and relationship with God leads to true peace, showing that fulfillment comes from aligning our lives with His will.
Children and Busyness—Why Even They Need a Break
Have you ever noticed how our kids’ schedules seem to be training for a mini Olympics, with back-to-back events from piano recitals to quantum physics for toddlers? When did “free time” disappear in parenting? Remember Jesus’ words in Matthew 19:14? He’s practically calling us out, “Let the little ones come to me and do not block their path with a bazillion activities, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Like their frazzled guardians, he knew that kids need space to breathe, play, and be kids. It’s about allowing them to discover, wonder, and connect without a packed schedule. It seems the Son of Man was onto something—moments of stillness and unstructured play aren’t just lovely; they’re necessary. Let’s take the hint and dial back on turning our children into mini CEOs before they can even spell ‘CEO’.
Busyness as a Badge of Honor—What’s the Point?
Oh, the modern-day martyrdom of busyness! We wear it like a flashy medal, parading around our packed schedules and eye-twitch-inducing to-do lists as if they’re the latest fashion trend. But let’s pause and flip through the pages of Ecclesiastes for a hot sec, where it’s written, “Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind” (Ecclesiastes 4:6). It’s as though we’re on a treadmill cranked up too high, thinking if we run a little faster, we’ll somehow start getting somewhere meaningful. Yet, Proverbs 14:30 gives us a nudge, whispering, “A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.” Yikes, rotting bones because we’re green-eyed over someone else’s Google Calendar? It seems the Good Book is tossing us a heavenly reality check: busyness for busyness’s sake is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Maybe it’s time we start questioning why we’re so addicted to the hustle. Let’s opt for a tranquil heart and life-giving peace over the endless hustle. Because at the end of the day, chasing peace is infinitely more rewarding than chasing the wind.
Practical Steps to Un-Busy Your Life
Let’s focus on simplifying our schedules and prioritizing our spiritual well-being. Start by setting aside time for daily prayer and Bible reading, even if it’s just a few minutes each morning or evening. This helps us stay mindful of God’s presence in our lives. Also, consider reducing commitments that don’t align with your spiritual or family values. It’s okay to say no to activities that only add to the clutter in your schedule rather than enriching your life or relationship with God. Creating a weekly family Sabbath can be a powerful way to prioritize rest and worship, bringing everyone closer together and closer to God. Remember, simplifying life isn’t about doing less for the sake of it, but making more room for what truly nourishes our souls and relationships with the Lord.
Encouragement and Hope for the Overwhelmed Parent
To every overwhelmed parent: you are not alone. The Bible provides guidance and comfort for these moments. God’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). Remember Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11:28 to find rest. Lean into His presence, and let His peace anchor your life.
