The Serpent in the Cup

“Drink is in itself a good creature of God… but the abuse of drink is from Satan.” ~ Mather
“One thing for sure, I have never heard anyone say, ‘A beer makes me feel more Christlike” ~ Max Lucado
“First a man takes a drink; then the drink takes a man.” ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald

Alcohol is mentioned several times in the Bible, offering guidance on its responsible use and warning about its dangers. Understanding the Biblical perspective requires looking at the historical context of alcohol and the balance between moderation and excess. Modern Christian views further clarify how attitudes towards alcohol have evolved. In Biblical times, wine was commonly consumed with meals and during religious ceremonies, as clean water was often scarce. Wine represented joy and blessings, but it needed to be used wisely to avoid problems.
The Bible addresses alcohol in various ways. Proverbs 20:1 warns that excessive drinking can lead to poor choices, saying, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise” (ESV). Ephesians 5:18 advises against drunkenness, stating, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” (ESV), emphasizing self-control. However, the Bible does not entirely prohibit alcohol; for example, Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding in Cana (John 2:1-11), showing that moderate drinking can be part of joyful occasions. The quality of the wine suggests that enjoying alcohol responsibly can be a positive experience.
The difference between moderation and excess is significant in the Biblical context. Moderate drinking is supported by scripture, allowing enjoyment of alcohol while avoiding its harms. Conversely, drunkenness is viewed as sinful, leading to moral and health problems, as well as a sense of separation from God. Today, there are various Christian views on alcohol. Some denominations, like Baptists and Methodists, promote total abstinence, believing the risks are greater than the benefits. Others, like Catholics and many Protestants, accept moderate drinking if done responsibly. These differing perspectives reflect the diverse cultural and theological backgrounds in Christianity.
The Bible focuses on making thoughtful choices in every part of life, drinking included. Drinking in moderation is okay, but it gives a warning about getting drunk. People should think about how their actions affect their faith and others. If you decide to drink, do it in a way that honours God. These 30 verses can help inspire you to live a balanced life and deepen your faith. Your actions should line up with what the Bible says is right.
